Our Mount Baldy adventure started around 10:15 a.m. on Memorial Day weekend. The weather couldn’t have been much better for hiking in the Black Hills, about 85 degrees with a light breeze that helped keep us comfortable throughout the day.
Our hiking group included myself, Chris, Tim, and Tera. None of us had hiked Mount Baldy before. We had heard great things about the trail from a friend and decided it was finally time to see what all the excitement was about.
Right from the start, the trailhead was easy to find and offered plenty of parking. There is also a vault toilet at the trailhead, which is always a nice bonus before heading out on the trail.
One thing to know before you go: this area is also popular with rock climbers, so parking lots and trails can become busy, especially on weekends and holidays.

The trail itself is generally easy to follow. Along the route, you’ll find Mount Baldy trail markers that help guide the way.
There are several intersecting trails and side paths throughout the hike, so paying attention to the signs is important. Anytime we came to a junction, we simply looked for the Mount Baldy markers and stayed on course.
The majority of the hike is relatively straightforward. The trail winds through classic Black Hills scenery with pine-covered hills, granite outcroppings, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the surrounding landscape.

Once we reached the top, every bit of effort was worth it.

Getting Back Down
The descent from the summit required a little creativity.
Like many hikers before us, we weren’t too proud to scoot down parts of the rock scramble on our backsides. Sometimes that’s simply the safest and easiest way to navigate steep rock sections!
After making it through the scramble, the rest of the hike back to the trailhead was straightforward as we retraced our route.
As we approached the parking area, we noticed several rock climbers working their way up nearby cliffs. We stopped for a while to watch them in action, which turned out to be a fun way to end the day.
