Lover’s Leap Trail is a scenic loop hike that leads to a stunning viewpoint atop a large granite rock ridge, offering expansive views of iconic Black Hills landmarks including Black Elk Peak, Cathedral Spires, and Mount Coolidge. The trail is steep and challenging at the start, climbing quickly through a ponderosa pine forest during the first mile. At the high point, hikers are rewarded with one of the most dramatic overlooks in the area.
Lover’s Leap is also known for its long-told local legend involving two young Native American lovers, adding a sense of history and mystery to the hike. After the summit, the trail descends along the side of the ridge, running parallel to Galena Creek through aspen groves and lush ground cover. Several stream crossings are encountered, where poison ivy may be present, so awareness is advised. Wildlife sightings are possible, including bighorn sheep or buffalo, making this loop a memorable blend of views, terrain, and natural diversity.

Lovely shade, easy creek access for the kids. Parking fills fast by 10am.

Rock in sections; bring poles. Worth it for the canyon views.
