Looking for a fun, scenic trail near Rapid City with a few surprises along the way? Bone Collector Trail, part of the Shanks Quarry Trail System near Rapid City, South Dakota, offers winding singletrack, forest scenery, and a collection of bones and skulls that give this trail its unusual name.
As you make your way through the trees, keep your eyes open for animal bones and skulls scattered along the route. There’s even a full skeleton to discover! It’s a quirky feature that adds a little treasure-hunt feel to your adventure.
Bone Collector is open to hikers and mountain bikers, with some sections of the surrounding trail system also used by dirt bikes.
The terrain isn’t overly strenuous, with relatively little elevation gain, making it a good option for those looking to get outside without tackling a major climb.
The trail follows a lollipop-style route with multiple loop options. Much of the adventure takes you along narrow singletrack through the forest, but depending on which route you choose, you can reach an overlook with scenic views of Highway 44 and the surrounding landscape.
One thing to know before heading out: the Shanks Quarry Trail System has numerous intersecting trails and loops, making it easy to take an unintended turn. Downloading a trail map or GPX route before you go is highly recommended to help you navigate the intersections and stay on your intended route.
Whether you’re hiking or mountain biking, Bone Collector Trail offers a fun Black Hills adventure with just enough twists, turns, and unexpected discoveries to keep things interesting.

Lovely shade, easy creek access for the kids. Parking fills fast by 10am.

Rock in sections; bring poles. Worth it for the canyon views.
