Experience
Hell Canyon Trail near Custer, SD, just outside Jewel Cave National Monument, is a challenging and rewarding Black Hills hike best suited for experienced adventurers. The trail begins with a steep, rocky climb before descending into a scenic canyon where you’ll finish alongside a flowing creek. Hiking the loop clockwise is recommended so you can tackle the toughest ascent first and end with shaded canyon walls, cooler temperatures, and refreshing water crossings that are great for dogs.
Much of the trail has little to no shade, and once inside the canyon, limited airflow can make hot days feel especially intense. For the best experience, plan this hike on cooler days or start early in the morning. Creek crossings are usually manageable in late summer but may be more difficult during spring runoff. With rugged terrain, dramatic scenery, and a quiet backcountry feel, Hell Canyon Trail offers a true Black Hills adventure near Custer.

Lovely shade, easy creek access for the kids. Parking fills fast by 10am.

Rock in sections; bring poles. Worth it for the canyon views.
