Black Elk Peak Trail Northern Trailhead

Experience

The Black Elk Peak Trail from the Northern Trailhead offers a longer, more challenging route to the highest point in South Dakota. Beginning at approximately 5,100 feet in elevation, this five-mile hike to the summit gains about 2,200 feet, making it significantly steeper and more demanding than the popular southern approach from Sylvan Lake. This less-traveled trail provides a quieter, more remote hiking experience and is often considered more scenic by those who prefer solitude. While most casual hikers choose the Sylvan Lake route, experienced hikers looking for a tougher climb and a rewarding wilderness experience may find the northern approach especially appealing.

Lovely shade, easy creek access for the kids. Parking fills fast by 10am.

Rock in sections; bring poles. Worth it for the canyon views.
