Celebrate Our Trail Community - Steven M.

For Steven M., the trails of the Black Hills are more than just miles to log, they are places to connect, reflect, and share stories along the way. A Rapid City resident and physician who has called the Hills home for just over seven years, Steven’s love for hiking began decades ago on family trips to National Parks and has only grown stronger with time. Whether he’s chasing sweeping views, enjoying a crisp winter hike well below zero, or ending the day with a celebratory handful of peanuts at a scenic overlook, Steven embodies the spirit of exploring the Hills in every season. Often joined by his wife Bonnie and a close-knit group of trail-loving friends, he reminds us that the best trail experiences are about community, curiosity, and getting outside, no matter the weather — values at the heart of the Trail Addict community..

What's your favorite way to enjoy the trails?

Hiking!

How did you first fall in love with exploring the outdoors?

Family trips to National Parks as a child.

What’s your favorite Black Hills trail and why?

So many favorites, but I’ll go with the Blackberry trail (starting at Mt. Rushmore), to the Centennial, then ending at Horsethief Lake.  Makes a great car swap – It’s just 4.4 miles, and it gives you a bit over 800 ft elevation gain.  It’s a great one-way hike when you just have a few hours.  Some great views, and I love the small waterfall at the end of the trail.

What’s your most memorable moment on a Black Hills trail?

Hiking the Southern terminus of the Centennial, in wind cave, in 2023.  We kept meeting people who were looking for Gin’s Horse (Finley) when the horse got away.  We were down by Wind Cave.  Here’s Gin’s story: https://www.blm.gov/blog/2023-12-13/gin-and-finley-ride-across-america.  We even met Gin! (spoiler alert – the horse was found after a few days, and she then completed her ride across America.)

What kind of trail day makes you happiest?

Any great view.  I also love a cold crisp winter day with no wind.  We hiked last weekend when it was -9 degrees F.  There’s no such thing as bad weather – just improper clothing!

What’s your favorite time of year to explore the Hills?

Any time of year!

Who’s your favorite trail companion (person, pet, or solo)?

I’ll always hike with at least one other person – primarily for safety (and because my wife insists!).  I’m very fortunate to have a few friends who are almost always willing to get out!

What’s one piece of gear you never hit the trail without?

A cap or hat – keeps the ticks off!  I also always have peanuts, and I love to enjoy a great view with a celebratory peanut!

What piece of gear do you always carry but rarely use?

Binoculars and a small first aid kit.

Are you a heavy packer or a minimalist?

I always have more than I need.

Which trail would you recommend for beginners?

Little Elk Creek trail.  It’s great views from the beginning, and you can go as far as you want.

Which trail would you recommend for someone who wants a challenge?

Sunday Gulch – hike it clockwise!

What’s one helpful tip you’d share with someone exploring the Black Hills for the first time?

Check your map before you go – the cell reception is pretty spotty in the hills!

What’s your dream trail or outdoor adventure destination outside the Black Hills?

I love river rafting trips with my adult children – O.A.R.S is a great organization – I call it “River rafting for dummies”.

Waterfalls or Summits?

Both!  But, I suppose if I had to pick, I’d go waterfalls.

Sunrise or Sunset?

Sunrise.  I’m a morning person.

Wildflowers or Wildlife?

Wildlife.

Smooth Trails or Rugged Terrain?

Rugged (but not a scrambler).

Solo or Group Adventures?

Group.

Boots or Tennis Shoes?

Hiking boots – love my Oboz.  Also, I hike with poles, because I trip over my own feet, and they save me.

What’s your go-to post-trail treat or meal?

Love a good burger!

If you could only hike or bike one trail in the Black Hills for the rest of your life, which trail would you choose and why?

Flume trail – it’s so cool to follow the track of the flume, and there are some great spots – see my picture from last weekend with the small frozen stream.

If you could have any superpower on the trail, what would it be?

The ability to stop the wind!
