Trail Itinerary

Spend a perfect day exploring waterfalls and canyon scenery with this Spearfish Falls itinerary through Spearfish Canyon. Start your morning with a stop at Elkhorn Ridge  Travel Center to fuel up your car and grab snacks for the road, then head into town for coffee and fresh-baked treats at The Vine Bakehouse & Coffee. As you drive up the canyon, pull over at Bridal Veil Falls, an easy roadside stop that makes a perfect photo opportunity—keep an eye out for the Spearfish Canyon mountain goats often spotted in this area and be sure to give them plenty of space. Continue up the canyon and park at the Latchstring Restaurant, then walk around the left side of the building to find the start of the Spearfish Falls Trail. Take your time as you meander down switchbacks, cross the creek, and enjoy views of towering limestone cliffs before reaching the falls, where benches invite you to sit and soak it all in. After hiking back up, enjoy a relaxed lunch at Latchstring with homemade favorites to suit any appetite. From there, you can walk across Highway 14 to access Roughlock Falls Trail, or drive directly to the falls if you’d rather save your legs. On the way back down the canyon, you can stop for another local favorite hike, Devils Bathtub Trail, where creek crossings, swimming, and even a natural rock slide make for a refreshing stop on hot days. Wrap up the itinerary at The Clubhouse of Spearfish, a fun place for the whole family to relax, refuel, and keep the adventure going with sports simulators, food, drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere after a day in the canyon.
