Trail Talk

TRAIL & ADVENTURE

What’s your favorite trail in the Black Hills and why?
Horse Thief trail head has to be one of my favorites. The scenery along the trail is magnificent, although my favorite part is finding rock formations just off the trail to navigate and explore.

Most memorable experience on a Black Hills trail?
While on trail near Sylvan Lake, I climbed a formation in which at the top I found a Herb and Jan Conn Registry.  I didn’t know much about it until I did a little research. It was a very cool find with a lot of history.

What’s always in your backpack (your must-carry items)?
Typically carry very little besides water, sunglasses, and maybe a change of shoes (depending on the terrain).

Who is your favorite hiking/adventure partner?
My Girlfriend is my favorite hiking partner. She is always up for whatever adventure we can get ourselves into. Her knowledge of hiking/backpacking/climbing serves our relationship well.

What are your top tips for people exploring the Hills?
Just go. I moved to the Black Hills area with little to no knowledge of the landscape and where to go. Decided one day that I’d go and figure it out and haven’t looked back since.

What Black Hills season do you love exploring in most — and why?
Spring. I hike in all seasons; but spring, with its feeling of new beginnings, has to be my favorite.

BEYOND THE BLACK HILLS

What’s the coolest place you’ve explored outside the Black Hills?
I’ve spent time in Colorado and Wyoming and they are some of the most memorable times of my life. There are too many bucket-list type places to name here in the US that I would love to explore yet.

If you could pick one dream destination for an outdoor trip, where would you go?
I would love to go mountaineering in the Alps or the Dolomites.

GEAR & ADVICE

What’s one piece of gear you can’t live without?
A good pair of boots or shoes.  For me its one of the biggest factors on whether I’m going to truly enjoy the hike. Each trail and rock formation presents different challenges that one pair of boots cant always meet.

What trail do you recommend for beginners?
Little Elk Creek Trail is great for beginners. Trail is easy to navigate, the scenery is beautiful, and a creek that runs alongside.

What trail do you recommend for those wanting a challenge?
The trails near cathedral spires are very cool and can be challenging. So many rock formations along the trail to look at or explore depending on what your comfort level is.

One piece of advice you’d give someone new to hiking or biking the Black Hills:
No time like the present. Life goes by way too quickly to tell ourselves we’ll do something next year. We are blessed to live where we do with so much to see, go check it out.

What outdoor activity do you enjoy most besides hiking? (Biking, fishing, climbing, trail running, etc.)
I’m very new to rock climbing, but its turning into one of my favorite activities. The black hills offer so much in terms of rock climbing whether you’re brand new to the sport like I am, or if you’re a seasoned veteran.
