Experience
Notch Trail is a short but dramatic hike that delivers one of the most memorable viewpoints in Badlands National Park. Beginning at the south end of the Door and Window parking area, the trail meanders through a narrow canyon before climbing a wooden log ladder and traversing a exposed ledge carved into the rock.
This thrilling section leads to “the Notch,” where hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the White River Valley stretching far below. Due to steep drop-offs and narrow footing along the ledge, caution is required at all times. Notch Trail is not recommended for those with a fear of heights and can be especially dangerous during or after heavy rains, when surfaces become slick and unstable. For confident hikers, this trail offers a unique blend of adventure, geology, and unforgettable Badlands scenery.

Lovely shade, easy creek access for the kids. Parking fills fast by 10am.

Rock in sections; bring poles. Worth it for the canyon views.
