Horsethief-Grizzly-Centennial Loop

The Horsethief–Grizzly–Centennial Loop is a remote and rewarding hike that begins at Horsethief Lake and combines three iconic Black Hills trails: Horsethief Trail, a section of Grizzly Bear Creek Trail, and a portion of the Centennial Trail. This loop offers a quieter alternative to more heavily traveled routes, making it ideal for hikers looking to explore less-visited areas of the Black Elk Wilderness.

Along the way, you’ll experience shaded forest sections, rugged terrain, and expansive backcountry scenery. Once you reach the Centennial Trail portion, an optional spur leads to Mount Rushmore as an out-and-back side trip, adding nearly two additional miles to your hike. Wildlife sightings are common on this loop, including deer and occasional mountain goats, and during July and August, hikers may find wild raspberries growing along the trail. With its solitude, scenery, and optional extensions, this loop is perfect for adventurous hikers seeking a true Black Hills backcountry experience.
