Gold Bison Grill in the DoubleTree Rapid City General Manager
I have been in hospitality for the past 15+ years and love being able to share the black hills with visitors. After college I went to Jamaica with the Peace Corps for 3 years and got to see both the positive and negative sides of tourism. That passion to do good within this industry took me to Grand Teton National Park to run several lodges and campgrounds. 10 years ago we moved our young family to Rapid City and never looked back!

Trail Talk
What’s your favorite trail in the Black Hills and why?
Less of a trail, but hiking the Needles Highway in the winter without any cars is really magical. It’s great to be able to take your time and enjoy that area without all the noise and traffic.
Most memorable experience on a Black Hills trail?
I recently went up Black Elk Peak via Grizzly #7 and had an amazing time. The Black Elk Wilderness is such a magical place and being able to get to the top of Black Elk Peak on a clear day was something that I’ll always remember.
What’s always in your backpack (your must-carry items)?
A water pump, a headlamp, and a rain jacket. The only thing constant about our weather is how often it changes.
Who is your favorite hiking/adventure partner?
My family. Seeing my kids enjoy the wilderness as much as I do has been amazingly rewarding.
What are your top tips for people exploring the Hills?
Pack layers for the unpredictable weather, and bring plenty of water. There are so many trails for a variety of experience levels, just get out there and start exploring!
Is there a trail in the Black Hills you think everyone should experience at least once?
Spring Creek trail is a great one. It’s relatively easy with lots of fun water crossings and there is a great picnic spot at the dam where you can watch people jump at Dakota Point.
What Black Hills season do you love exploring in most — and why?
I love the fall. The trails are a bit quieter and the cool weather makes long hikes that much more comfortable. Getting to watch the change in colors during the season across different elevations is really fun.
Favorite trail snack or post-hike treat?
Purple Pie Place in Custer for a slice of pie a-la-mode.
What’s the coolest place you’ve explored outside the Black Hills?
Hiking around Scotland and the Isle of Skye was a great experience. The people and the food were just fantastic.
If you could pick one dream destination for an outdoor trip, where would you go?
I would love to drive up to Denali and explore.
Favorite national park or public land you’ve visited?
Grand Teton National Park really is amazing, Delta Lake is by far my favorite spot.
Most surprising wildlife encounter (here or elsewhere)?
In Grand Teton National Park, we came face-to-face with a bear eating berries. It was on a ridge, so there wasn’t anywhere we could go, so we just waiting for her to eat her way down the slope and got a move on fast!
What’s one piece of gear you can’t live without?
I drink a lot of water on the trail, so I never go out without my backpack with a water bladder and build in water filter.
What trail do you recommend for beginners?
Spring Creek
What trail do you recommend for those wanting a challenge?
Black Elk Peak is the highest point east of the Rocky’s. The views are unbeatable and there is such an amazing energy there.
One piece of advice you’d give someone new to hiking or biking the Black Hills:
Just get out there!
What outdoor activity do you enjoy most besides hiking? (Biking, fishing, climbing, trail running, etc.)
I love biking on the Mickelson Trail and have had the pleasure of biking the entire length back in 2023.
