Experience
The Centennial Trail is a historic 111-mile long-distance trail built in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of South Dakota’s statehood. Stretching across some of the most diverse landscapes in the Black Hills, the trail travels through open prairies, forested hills, and mountainous terrain. The route begins at Bear Butte State Park, passes through the Fort Meade Recreation Area, Black Hills National Forest, and Custer State Park, and ends in Wind Cave National Park.
The Centennial Trail is a multi-use trail open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, making it a popular option for day trips, section hikes, and multi-day adventures. Certain portions of the trail pass through wilderness or sensitive areas and are closed to bikes or horses; these sections are clearly marked on the trail. With its length, variety of terrain, and connection to iconic Black Hills landscapes, the Centennial Trail offers a unique and rewarding way to experience South Dakota’s outdoor heritage.

Lovely shade, easy creek access for the kids. Parking fills fast by 10am.

Rock in sections; bring poles. Worth it for the canyon views.
