Experience

The Black Elk Peak Trail from Sylvan Lake is the most popular and well-traveled route to the summit of Black Elk Peak, the highest point in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. This 3.2-mile hike (one way) is considered moderate in difficulty, with steady elevation gain and sections of rocky terrain along the way. Hikers are rewarded with stunning scenery throughout the route, including granite formations, pine forests, and multiple scenic viewpoints that offer sweeping views of the Black Hills and surrounding landscape.

Trail conditions can vary depending on weather, with some muddy sections after rain or snowmelt. The final three-quarters of a mile transitions to fine, sandy footing, which can be slippery in spots and requires extra care. Near the summit, a series of stone steps leads to the historic fire tower and can feel strenuous after the climb, but the panoramic views from the top make the effort well worth it. This trail is a must-do hike for anyone visiting Custer State Park or exploring the Black Hills.

Lovely shade, easy creek access for the kids. Parking fills fast by 10am.

Rock in sections; bring poles. Worth it for the canyon views.
