A Sunny Spring Hike on Grace Coolidge Trail

This past weekend, my boys and I set out for a hike on the Grace Coolidge Walk-In Fishing Trail in Custer State Park. We started on the south end of the trail, but you can also begin on the north side, which starts right at the parking lot at Center Lake. Either direction gives you a peaceful, scenic 5.5-mile round trip—but the real charm of this trail is in the journey, not the destination (as I learned the hard way).

The day was picture-perfect—sunny skies and 65 degrees, with a light breeze and plenty of shade along the trail. The path follows Grace Coolidge Creek, and you’ll cross it more than a dozen times. Most crossings have wooden plank bridges, which makes it easy to keep your feet dry (as long as you’re not chasing kids who think hopping rocks is more fun).

We saw lots of little fish darting through the clear, shallow water at each crossing, which kept things exciting for the boys. Then came the wildlife! First, a harmless little garter snake slithered across the trail… and then, a few minutes later, we came across a huge bull snake stretched out across the path. Let’s just say that got everyone’s attention.

As we hiked the 2.5 miles to the end, I kept bribing my boys with the promise of a waterfall at the turnaround point. I have hiked this trail several times and always enjoyed the climb up alongside the waterfall.I was sure it would be a great reward for all the effort. But when we finally got there… nothing. The waterfall was dried up and all that remained was a rocky pile and some disappointed kids. Total mom fail!

Even without the waterfall, though, Grace Coolidge Trail is absolutely worth the hike. Between the peaceful creek, wildlife sightings, and family-friendly terrain, it’s a must-do hike in Custer State Park. Just maybe check the water levels first before promising your kids a magical waterfall at the end.
